Most cars have two air filters, and they do completely different jobs. The engine air filter sits in a box under the hood and cleans the air your engine breathes. An engine pulls in a huge volume of air for every gallon of gas it burns, so a filter that lets dust through sends grit straight into the cylinders. The cabin air filter usually sits behind the glove box or under the cowl at the base of the windshield, and it cleans the air that comes out of your vents, which is the air you and your passengers breathe on every drive.

Because they do different jobs, they wear on different schedules. A work truck that sees dirt roads may need a new engine air filter long before its cabin filter, while a commuter car mostly clogs its cabin filter with pollen and leaves. Start with your owner's manual. Many list the engine air filter somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 miles and the cabin air filter on a similar schedule or about once a year. Parking under pine trees fills the cabin filter housing with needles, and a car that sits outside all summer can grow a musty filter well ahead of schedule.

For a while, usually. A dusty cabin filter mostly costs you comfort: weaker airflow, a slow defroster and more pollen in the car, so it can wait until your next visit unless someone in the car has allergies or the windows won't clear. An engine air filter that is gray but not packed can also ride a little longer. Two kinds should not wait: an engine air filter caked with dirt or torn, which lets grit into the engine, and a clogged fuel filter that already makes the car stumble or start hard.

Waiting on those two is where a cheap part turns into a bigger repair. Dirt that slips past a torn filter can coat the mass airflow sensor and wear the engine from the inside. A fuel filter that is choking the flow makes the fuel pump work harder on every drive, and a worn-out pump costs far more than the filter that strained it. Honestly, on most modern cars, not by much. Today's fuel-injected engines measure the air coming in and adjust the fuel to match, so a dirty engine air filter usually costs you power and pickup more than miles per gallon. On older cars with carburetors, a clogged filter could hurt mileage more noticeably, which is where the old advice came from.

So why replace it? A clean filter keeps grit out of the engine, protects the mass airflow sensor that sits right behind it, and gives back the pickup you feel when you merge onto I-20 or Bobby Jones. If your mileage has dropped suddenly, the cause is more likely worn spark plugs, a sensor or a sticking brake, and a tune-up or diagnostic check will find it. Many Hyundai and Kia models, like the Tucson and Sorento, keep the cabin filter behind the glove box, while some trucks and vans hide it much deeper in the dash.

What a shop adds is the look around.
