Black Exhaust Smoke
When a faulty MAF sensor reports incorrect air inflow, the unit may think that the combustion chamber needs more fuel when it doesn’t, resulting in black exhaust smoke from the tailpipe as excess fuel burns.
Performance Issues
Excessive fuel causes engine problems including surging and stalling from flooding. Additionally, too much air in the combustion chamber produces acceleration lag and engine sputtering.
Rough Engine Idle
A faulty sensor can create rough idling when excess air enters the combustion chamber, indicating fuel starvation. The sensor commonly becomes dirty because it sits directly behind the air filter.
Poor Gas Mileage
Engine performance problems directly reduce fuel efficiency, causing noticeable decreases in miles per gallon.
Hard Starts / No Starts
Dirty MAF sensors can prevent vehicle startup or cause difficult starting due to improper fuel or air ratios, or error codes sent to the engine control unit.
Check Engine Warning
A faulty sensor may indirectly trigger the check engine light when the engine control unit receives an error code from a system sensor.
