A squeal means the belt is slipping on a pulley instead of gripping it. The usual cause is a worn belt that has lost the grip in its ribs, or one that has glazed shiny from heat. The serpentine belt, also called the drive belt or fan belt, lives on the outside of the engine and turns the alternator, the A/C compressor, the power steering pump on many cars and often the water pump.
