These are the issues we see most on BMW vehicles here in the CSRA. Each one notes which models, engines, or years it actually affects, since not every BMW has the same setup. Knowing the patterns means we diagnose faster and fix it right the first time.

  Oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets

  Affects: Most models

  This is the number one thing we see on BMWs. The gaskets get brittle from engine heat and start seeping, often onto the hot exhaust where you smell burning oil. It is a straightforward reseal once we catch it.

  Cooling system failures

  Affects: Most models, usually 80,000+ miles

  Water pumps, thermostats, and the plastic expansion tank all wear out on these, usually somewhere past 80,000 miles. We watch the cooling system closely because an overheated BMW gets expensive fast.

  N20 timing chain

  Affects: N20 4-cylinder (2012-2015)

  Early N20 four-cylinder engines had timing chain and guide issues. If you own one of these years, it is worth keeping an eye on and not stretching your oil changes.
