- The Prince-engine timing chain is a known weak spot, so if you hear a rattle on cold start get it looked at before it does damage.
- MINI calls for a specific full-synthetic oil spec; we use the correct oil.

Timing chain and tensioner failure, the death rattle
Affects: N12 and N14 'Prince' enginesThe number one thing we see on MINIs with the N12 and N14 Prince engines. A worn timing chain and tensioner make a rattle, often called the death rattle, especially on a cold start. Catch it early because a chain that lets go does engine damage.
Premature clutch wear on the manual Cooper S and JCW
Affects: Manual Cooper S / JCW (~66,000 miles)On the manual Cooper S and John Cooper Works the clutch wears out early, often around 66,000 miles. We replace the clutch and check the rest of the assembly while we are in there.
Cooling-system leaks and power-steering-pump failure
Affects: Most modelsWe also see cooling-system leaks and the electric power-steering pump fail on these. Both are common enough that they are worth keeping an eye on.
