Motor oil does three jobs: it coats the moving parts so metal never rubs on metal, it carries heat away from the hottest parts of the engine, and it holds dirt in suspension until the filter can catch it. As the miles pile up, heat breaks the oil down and the additives that keep it clean get used up. The oil thins out where it should stay thick, and dirt that should flow to the filter settles into the engine instead. Left long enough, that dirt bakes into sludge that blocks the small passages oil needs to reach the top of the engine.

A sludged engine does not fail all at once. It ticks, it burns oil, it runs hotter, and parts like the timing chain wear out early. Those are expensive repairs that a regular oil change prevents. A few hundred miles past due is not a crisis, but a few thousand is how the trouble starts. That depends on which light you see. The wrench icon or an oil life message is a reminder: the oil is worn, not gone, and you have a little time to book a visit in the next week or so. You might notice blue smoke at startup, an oily smell from the tailpipe, or simply a dipstick that keeps reading low.

Some engines use a little oil by design, and your owner's manual says what is normal. More than that is worth tracking down before the level drops far enough to hurt the bearings. Start with your owner's manual. It lists the oil weight your engine needs, like 0W-20 or 5W-30, and whether it requires full synthetic. Many newer engines, especially turbocharged ones, are built around synthetic, and running conventional oil in them can shorten engine life. Full synthetic holds up best to heat and lasts longest between changes. A synthetic blend mixes the two for a middle price. Conventional oil still suits plenty of older, simpler engines, and high-mileage oil adds seal conditioners that can slow small leaks on engines with a lot of miles.
